Latest Perst from McObject Delivers Microsoft Silverlight Embedded Database Support with Secure Local Storage

McObject announce availability of the latest Perst Embedded Database software release for use with Microsoft’s Silverlight technology for building rich Internet applications, and unveiled a demo that shows Perst in a Web-based customer relationship management (CRM) application written in Silverlight.

The CRM demo application can be launched from the McObject Web site, together with a download of the complete demo source code, along with an article that comments extensively on the code to illustrate Perst’s role in this application.

The full press release from McObject can be found here.

It seems what McObject have delivered for Silverlight is pretty unique. In numerous forums lots of people are searching for a database for Silverlight applications. Candidate DBMSs are offered as possible solutions, but until now there has not been anything that could be offered a proven database for Silverlight with an actual reference application in place.

About Perst for Silverlight

Perst is McObject's open source, dual license, object-oriented embedded database system (ODBMS). It is available in one edition developed as an all-Java embedded database, and another implemented in C# (for Microsoft .NET Framework applications).

Perst gives developers the ability to sort, store and retrieve objects in their applications with maximum speed and with low memory and storage overhead, while leveraging the object-oriented paradigm of the C# and Java languages.

With its newly added Silverlight support, Perst for .NET enables Silverlight applications to leverage DBMS features including transactions, a flexible and easy-to-use API, multiple database indexes, garbage collection and more. Uses of Perst with Silverlight include client-side caching, software as a service (SaaS) architectures, and storage of application settings and of data for tables, grids and lists in Web forms. With Perst, clients can also store data from unfinished projects that use Silverlight Web applications.

To enforce security in Silverlight-based Web clients, Perst requires explicit permission from local users before allowing data storage to exceed the maximum 1 megabyte size allowed under the quota. Also for security, the isolated storage feature in Silverlight restricts the Perst-based application to using a sub-tree of the file system for database storage. Developers can also choose to use Perst for transient, memory-only storage in Silverlight applications.

MPC Data releases new White Paper Comparing Windows XPe and WES 2009 23/04/2009

Microsoft produces both Windows XP Embedded and Windows Embedded Standard 2009 operating system products. This White Paper is based on MPC Data’s experience and compares the key differences between the two products so that informed decisions can be made as to which one may best suit a particular set of product requirements.

The paper is aimed at managers and technical professionals who have some experience with the Windows XP Embedded toolset. It discusses the differences in toolset functionality and types of embedded operating systems produced by Windows Embedded Standard (WES) 2009 and Windows XP Embedded (XPe) SP2 Feature Pack 2007.

The paper is intended to provide assistance when deciding upon which of the two embedded operating systems best meets specific new project requirements and considering the migration of existing projects from Windows XP Embedded FP2007 to Windows Embedded Standard 2009.

In depth detail about the embedded operating systems is given and a clear analysis comparing these functions is provided in an easy to read format so that this paper can be used as a quick reference guide by all without losing any of the integral detail. The paper also provides many links and references to other sources to substantiate the evidence given and links to several websites where the latest information and updates can be found.

MPC Data and Datalight announce Reliance Nitro 03/04/2009

MPC Data and Datalight announce Reliance Nitro

Datalight Releases New Tree-Based File System -- Boosts Windows Mobile Performance by 500%

Datalight announced a new tree-based file system for improved performance on Windows Embedded CE, Windows Mobile, and VxWorks.

London, 31 March 2009 – MPC Data and Datalight announced Reliance Nitro, a new tree-based file system with broad performance implications for embedded device manufacturers around the globe. Early tests show sequential and random write speeds as much as five times faster on Microsoft Windows Mobile than the default file system, allowing devices like Smartphones and digital cameras to store and access large amounts of data without the lag time often experienced when dealing with multimedia and other large files.

To make Reliance Nitro faster than other file systems, the Datalight engineering team analyzed all I/O operations, eliminated all redundant calls to the disk, and optimized the file system’s disk operations. This translates into much faster throughput speed for read and write operations. In fact, the revolutionary tree-based allocation structure allows Nitro to be up to 100 times faster on file operation speeds, enabling a far more responsive user experience.

The new file system will initially be available for Windows Embedded CE, Windows Mobile, and Wind River VxWorks. An RTOS porting kit will be offered to allow porting to any 32-bit operating system. Like Reliance, the well-known transactional file system on which it is based; Reliance Nitro provides 100% data reliability and fast mount times.

“Our intent in building Reliance Nitro was to mitigate the sluggish performance associated with increasing data storage on devices,” said Roy Sherrill, Datalight CEO. “Nitro will allow users to finally enjoy the high speed capabilities of flash. We expect fast adoption as manufacturers vie for the loyalty of customers seeking better performing devices.”

Reliance Nitro is available immediately from MPC Data. Please visit us at http://www.mpcdata.com or send an email to datalight@mpcdata.com to find out more.
