The Board Support Package (BSP) allows you to focus on your application development and get your product to market (and hence revenue) faster. Aimed primarily at Texas Instruments’ Davinci, Sitara & OMAP families, you will see that MPC Data have a range of products to suit the ARM9 and Cortex-A8 cores and hence provide a number of BSPs to support the various development platforms that customers are starting their designs on. Since the launch of Windows Embedded Standard 7 in April 2010, MPC Data has often been asked about the benefits of Standard 7 over its predecessor, Windows Embedded Standard 2009 (aka WES2009). Standard 7 is a componentised version of Windows 7, whilst WES2009 is based upon Windows XP Pro. But if WES2009 is two generations behind the leading edge of operating system technology, does that mean that it is now inappropriate for use in new embedded devices? The answer depends on a range of factors including target hardware capability and detailed product requirements. In some specific cases WES2009 might still be the better choice. This new white paper by MPC Data's lead engineer for Windows Embedded Standard outlines the key features of Standard 7, and provides a detailed comparison with earlier Windows Embedded Standard products. It is aimed at both technical and business decision makers who want to familiarise themselves with Window Embedded Standard 7 features, and will be of particular benefit to those with WES2009 experience who wish to understand the differences between the two products. With the latest V1.1 release of the Windows CE 6.0R3 BSP for the Beagleboard, MPC Data includes additional tools, documentation and configurable support for both 128MB and 256MB hardware revisions. MPC Data have also announced roadmap support for Windows Embedded Compact 7 on the same platform with the offer of a free upgrade to the Compact 7 BSP for existing customers when released. More details of the Windows CE6.0R3 BSP for the Beagleboard can be found on our Beagleboard BSP page. The processing power offered by the OMAP3 processor on the Beagleboard, with its 600/720MHz ARM Cortex A8 core and on-chip PowerVR 2D graphics accelerator, coupled with the new Compact 7 BSP ensures that graphics-intensive Silverlight 3.0 applications run efficiently and with minimal impact on CPU utilisation. The current BSP development is based on Windows Embedded Compact 7 CTP as part of our participation, as leading Microsoft Gold Level partners, in the early adopter program for Windows Embedded technologies. MPC Data are timing the production release of this BSP to coincide with the official release of Compact 7 by Microsoft. Contact us at windows@mpcdata.com for more details of our roadmap. A number of starter kit bundles are available for the very popular Perst embedded database software from McObject which gives customers a low-entry cost for developing and deploying products based on C# .NET, Silverlight, Java and J2ME. We are all witnessing the trend in Embedded designs moving to more powerful processor solutions and the need to move to High Level Operating Systems (HLOS), part of this trend also requires a stable, high quality BSP which enables the programmer to exploit the full range of the development board’s capabilities. The BSP provides the foundation for the overlying HLOS, and helps to ensure its overall speed and reliability.
Neville Bulsara, MPC Data Business Development Manager, says “The BSPs compliment a range of products and services that we have fo embedded device developers to start up their design teams much more quickly and also allow their application specialists to focus on their end product design rather than issues such as device drivers and frameworks – which often require different specialist knowledge to that which is available in house. As we build up to the expected release of Microsoft Windows Embedded Compact 7 next year - we will be enabling customers to move forward on their existing designs and eventually migrate from WinCE 6 BSP products if needed”
It makes a great deal of commercial sense to focus your internal development effort on delivering the software IP that differntiates your product in the marketplace rather than expending precious build-in-house effort on producing a stable OS platform. Let the experts at MPC Data do the heavy lifting on enabling your platform with an off-the-shelf production ready BSP that has been CETK tested and comes with specialist technical support when you need.
MPC Data also provides a range of software application development services, with specialist teams at all levels of embedded software development from boot-loader to turn-key application. Migrating prototype code from a silicon reference platform to your custom hardware, driver development or board bring-up and SoC hardware acceleration are key areas where spcialist assistance will save you time and reduce risk.
More recent developments have included sophisticated Medical, Video Security and Industrial projects for a worldwide customer base.
Based in the UK and North America MPC Data is an award winning Microsoft Gold partner providing World Class Embedded Software Solutions and Products to the embedded community,
