Software maintence
Although the majority of our business lies in writing new systems we also provide a Software Maintenance service for systems which are already in active operation.

This provides one or more of the following benefits to our clients:

  • Releases in-house engineering staff so that they can be assigned to new developments or other core business activities
  • Fills a temporary or permanent skills shortage
  • Fills a temporary or permanent resource shortage
Our initial involvement usually takes the form of a feasibility study followed by a quotation for the subsequent cover. This is likely to be costed on a time-and-materials basis. Obviously the precise details of the cover to be provided depend closely on what we learn from the client during preparatory discussions and the feasibility study.

It is difficult to predict in advance which of our many areas of expertise may be relevant to a new maintenance assignment so instead of listing everything we have just listed a few such areas which are relevant to software maintenance in particular.
  • Older versions of Windows and DOS OS at SDK/int level
  • Older versions of Unix at kernel level
  • SQL and embedded SQL
  • Various source control systems old and new, including SCCS, RTS, CVS and ClearCase
  • Familiarity with working to a variety of customer coding standards
  • Lastly (but by no means least) considerable experience in following legacy code and applying retrospective documentation if required
