µCLinux is a small footprint, low resource version of the popular Linux kernel for processors without a memory management unit (MMU). MPC Data performed a ‘ground-up’ port of µCLinux 2.6.19 to the CR16C+ architecture together with supporting µCLibc library and BusyBox using the new GCC tool-chain from National Semiconductor. SiTel engineers worked closely with MPC Data to integrate their latest SIP stack with the platform.
Mark de Clercq, Product Marketing Manager, SiTel Semiconductor BV comments: “SiTel set very aggressive timescales for the introduction of its VoIP platform into the market. We would not have been able to meet these timescales without the technical expertise and professionalism demonstrated by MPC Data and we are proud to welcome them as a software development partner. It has been a great team effort.”
“Porting Linux to any 16-bit core architecture is always going to be a technical challenge but one which we are very familiar with, this being our 3rd µCLinux port. We overcame some significant challenges along the way, particularly with the implementation of posix threads and runtime symbol relocations. We are very pleased with the cache optimisations we achieved to deliver kernel performance comparable to that of currently available standard 32-bit RISC processors. We pride ourselves on the stability of the BSP and tools we developed to meet the high standards demanded by SiTel.” added Phil Buckley, MPC Data’s Linux Embedded Business Group Director.
The µCLinux platform and toolchain for the SiTel SC14450 is available immediately through SiTel Semiconductor BV bundled with the recently announced Enterprise VoIP Development Kit.

LONDON, UK – 17 July, 2007. . . Renesas Technology Europe and its Platinum Alliance Partner MPC Data Limited have announced the immediate availability of the official µCLinux Board Support Package (BSP) and tool chain for Renesas’ SH-2A-based microcontroller, the SH7203. This µCLinux BSP is fully compliant with Renesas’ RSK7203plus development board, and includes the drivers for the peripherals integrated in the SH7203. This allows developers to target a wide variety of applications requiring connectivity, TFT-drive and hundreds of MIPS performance, as is often the case when industrial PC applications have to go to lower power, lower cost and less space. The BSP covers MMI features, communications and storage and includes versions of Binutils and BusyBox.
µCLinux is a small footprint, small resource version of the popular Linux kernel for microcontrollers without a memory management unit (MMU). Porting µCLinux to the SH7203 allows developers to take advantage of the wealth of software available for Linux. Most applications can be directly compiled on µClinux, or can be made to work with only some minor porting or adaptation.
Says Joachim Hopper, Renesas Technology’s Consumer-Industrial Business Unit Marketing Manager, “We are pleased to complement our high-quality and very fast SH-2A family of microcontrollers with µCLinux. The combination of the RSK7203plus development board and the new µCLinux BSP gives developer a good “out of the box” experience when using the SH-2A family.”
“With the increasing popularity of Linux in embedded applications, and the increased performance of embedded microcontrollers, this highly stable, tested µClinux BSP gives SH-2A application developers a great starting platform to take forward Linux applications into product development and production” added Phil Buckley, MPC Data’s Linux Embedded Business Group Director.
The RSK7203plus development board and µCLinux BSP is available now.
Renesas’ SH-2A family features a superscalar RISC CPU core with harvard architecture and versions with IEEE-compliant floating point unit (FPU). Register banks enable extremely fast interrupt response in as little as 30ns. CPU performance is as high as 480 Dhrystone MIPS and peripherals within the family include up to 8 x serial, 4 x IIC, SPI, SSI, CAN, USB (Host/Function), TFT drive as well as strong timers with AC motor modes and 12bit ADC’s with 3x S&H to name just some examples.
