Datalight Releases New Tree-Based File System -- Boosts Windows Mobile Performance by 500%

Datalight announced a new tree-based file system for improved performance on Windows Embedded CE, Windows Mobile, and VxWorks.

London, 31 March 2009 – MPC Data and Datalight announced Reliance Nitro, a new tree-based file system with broad performance implications for embedded device manufacturers around the globe. Early tests show sequential and random write speeds as much as five times faster on Microsoft Windows Mobile than the default file system, allowing devices like Smartphones and digital cameras to store and access large amounts of data without the lag time often experienced when dealing with multimedia and other large files.

To make Reliance Nitro faster than other file systems, the Datalight engineering team analyzed all I/O operations, eliminated all redundant calls to the disk, and optimized the file system’s disk operations. This translates into much faster throughput speed for read and write operations. In fact, the revolutionary tree-based allocation structure allows Nitro to be up to 100 times faster on file operation speeds, enabling a far more responsive user experience.

The new file system will initially be available for Windows Embedded CE, Windows Mobile, and Wind River VxWorks. An RTOS porting kit will be offered to allow porting to any 32-bit operating system. Like Reliance, the well-known transactional file system on which it is based; Reliance Nitro provides 100% data reliability and fast mount times.

“Our intent in building Reliance Nitro was to mitigate the sluggish performance associated with increasing data storage on devices,” said Roy Sherrill, Datalight CEO. “Nitro will allow users to finally enjoy the high speed capabilities of flash. We expect fast adoption as manufacturers vie for the loyalty of customers seeking better performing devices.”

Reliance Nitro is available immediately from MPC Data. Please visit us at http://www.mpcdata.com or send an email to datalight@mpcdata.com to find out more.

The Reliance family of file systems and FlashFX family of flash media managers comprise the Datalight flash file system solution. Reliance was designed from the ground up for high reliability applications. Dynamic Transaction Point™ technology provides 100% immunity from file system corruption, even after unexpected system interruption. Embedded applications can benefit from faster boot times that remain consistent for the life of the product, regardless of disk size. FlashFX™ Pro features pre-written support for over 300 flash parts, works with virtually any NAND controller, and features wear levelling, bad block management, and background compaction for unrivalled performance. Datalight flash file system products are also available on Linux and other operating systems.

MPC Data Inc announced the immediate availability of a reference and development kit for the Renesas SH7723 with complete documentation for rapid development of OEM solutions. The HiCO.DIMM7723 provided by emtrion GmbH (Karlsruhe, Germany) provides an easy introduction to Renesas’ audio and video technologies. Board support packages supplied with the developer kits are available for Microsoft Windows CE 6.0 R2 and a Linux 2.6.27 kernel. The system consists of an SO-DIMM CPU module and a choice of carrier boards. As well as the processor, the SO-DIMM CPU module also contains the memory chips, Ethernet controller and RTC. The two carrier boards each feature all the components that experience has shown customers need, such as audio, video, USB host and device interfaces based on USB 2.0, and a 100 MBit Ethernet interface, power supply and connector. The reference boards are not only suitable for evaluation and development, but can also be used directly for end applications. This significantly cuts development times for OEM projects. The solution is also extremely low power, making it ideal for mobile applications. Additionally, the HiCO.DIMM7723 BSPs will incorporate Renesas’ codecs and hardware accelerators when available.

SH7723 for visualization interfaces in embedded systems

Video and Audio UIs are increasingly being used to provide operating instructions directly and present rich, interactive control panels on the device. With the SH7723, Renesas is offering a specific 32-bit RISC component for these types of audio and video applications with graphics acceleration for complex GUIs (Graphical User Interfaces). The processor features onboard multimedia interfaces, video in/out, a 5 megapixel camera interface, an audio processor, LCD controller, 2D graphics acceleration and SD card controller and operates at a frequency of 400 MHz with L2 cache and powerful FPU (Floating Point Unit). MPEG-4/H.264 acceleration directly on the hardware allows video recordings and decoding at up to 30 frames per second.

Both emtrion and MPC Data are Platinum level Renesas Global Alliance Program members, with many years experience with Renesas’ SH range of RISC devices, enabling them to give in-depth consultancy, support and services to Renesas customers.
