LONDON, UK – 17 July, 2007. . . Renesas Technology Europe and its Platinum Alliance Partner MPC Data Limited have announced the immediate availability of the official µCLinux Board Support Package (BSP) and tool chain for Renesas’ SH-2A-based microcontroller, the SH7203. This µCLinux BSP is fully compliant with Renesas’ RSK7203plus development board, and includes the drivers for the peripherals integrated in the SH7203. This allows developers to target a wide variety of applications requiring connectivity, TFT-drive and hundreds of MIPS performance, as is often the case when industrial PC applications have to go to lower power, lower cost and less space. The BSP covers MMI features, communications and storage and includes versions of Binutils and BusyBox.
µCLinux is a small footprint, small resource version of the popular Linux kernel for microcontrollers without a memory management unit (MMU). Porting µCLinux to the SH7203 allows developers to take advantage of the wealth of software available for Linux. Most applications can be directly compiled on µClinux, or can be made to work with only some minor porting or adaptation.
Says Joachim Hüpper, Renesas Technology’s Consumer-Industrial Business Unit Marketing Manager, “We are pleased to complement our high-quality and very fast SH-2A family of microcontrollers with µCLinux. The combination of the RSK7203plus development board and the new µCLinux BSP gives developer a good “out of the box” experience when using the SH-2A family.”
“With the increasing popularity of Linux in embedded applications, and the increased performance of embedded microcontrollers, this highly stable, tested µClinux BSP gives SH-2A application developers a great starting platform to take forward Linux applications into product development and production” added Phil Buckley, MPC Data’s Linux Embedded Business Group Director.
The RSK7203plus development board and µCLinux BSP is available now.
Renesas’ SH-2A family features a superscalar RISC CPU core with harvard architecture and versions with IEEE-compliant floating point unit (FPU). Register banks enable extremely fast interrupt response in as little as 30ns. CPU performance is as high as 480 Dhrystone MIPS and peripherals within the family include up to 8 x serial, 4 x IIC, SPI, SSI, CAN, USB (Host/Function), TFT drive as well as strong timers with AC motor modes and 12bit ADC’s with 3x S&H to name just some examples.

MPC Data provides additional support for Embedded Linux
on SuperH microprocessors
London, 15 January, 2004 - Renesas Technology Europe and MPC Data Ltd. today announced the availability of Embedded Linux Distributions tailored for development boards for SuperH TM microprocessors such as SH7705, SH7751R, and SH7760. This includes a major update of its support website for Linux running on Renesas SuperH microprocessors (www.shlinux.com). MPC Data operates www.shlinux.com on behalf of Renesas Technology Europe to provide downloadable distributions and technical support for Linux running on Renesas EDOSK and SystemH development platforms.
MPC Data provides Embedded Linux Distributions tailored for Renesas development boards. These include pre-built binaries, documentation and full source code. Each Board Support Package (BSP) consists of a precompiled toolchain, a bootloader, a precompiled kernel and a disk image. Software integration support is provided either as a free email service or as a paid service for custom software integration development, training and consultancy.
Following on from the success of the EDOSK7705 platform, support has been added for the SystemH7751R, EDOSK7751R and EDOSK7760. In addition, the Embedded Linux distributions have been enhanced to provide a TFTP bootloader, Flash, USB, and video support for the EDOSK7705.
"We have seen an increasing interest from our customers in using Linux as the operating system of choice for embedded applications" said Carsten Wild, Product Marketing Engineer, SuperH Systems Group at Renesas. "However, the lack of confidence in implementing Linux successfully and cost-effectively into complex embedded applications, has, until now, proved a hindrance for Linux in reaching its full potential. By providing ready-to-use BSPs with an integrated support structure provided by MPC Data, the development of products based on Embedded Linux becomes greatly simplified."
Graham Anstey, Senior Consultant at MPC Data added: "Linux has always been rejected due to a perceived lack of support from suppliers. What developers require is a source of help as and when they need it. Through www.shlinux.com , MPC Data provides the SH developer community with this knowledge at their fingertips, 24 hours a day."
