Conveyer Belt Monitor saves millions 27/07/2005

Large quarries and mines frequently carry their raw product to processing or storage areas via giant conveyor belts. The belts can be many kilometres in length, costing hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. When you consider the nature of the product being carried, it's not surprising that belts are sometimes punctured by rocks or machinery teeth which have sheared from the cutting equipment. In such cases it is essential that the damage is detected quickly to minimise the risk of the puncture turning into a rip which propagates along the belt.

MPC Data has just completed the latest incarnation of software for the world's leading belt-damage detection system. The sensor technology has been perfected by Ashby Microsystems Limited. At MPC Data we worked very closely with their engineers to design and implement critical PC-based software to gather, analyse and present data from Ashby's sensors. The finished product continuously analyses belt 'signature' information to provide automatic warnings of any change in belt characteristics. The new software is already installed at one site in Arizona with others to follow soon.
