BCS Award 07/09/2005

Chris Peerman of MPC Data was a recent winner of a BCS award for his project Canvas Studio.

Canvas Studio is an open-source Java framework which provides a simple digital imaging application for the Eclipse IDE. Canvas Studio features a plug-in architecture which allows 3rd party developers to extend the functional diversity of the application. Core features of Canvas Studio include:
  • Many of the core features found within popular applications such as Photoshop and The GIMP such as layered images, opacity, blending modes, texture and filter support.
  • A tools framework that allows 3rd party developers to develop brush tools such as Paint Brush, Airbrush, shapes and selections.
  • Import/Export framework that allows 3rd party developers to import/export images from many different image file formats.
Thanks to the Eclipse RCP and Java technology, Canvas Studio will run on almost any platform supporting Java and the Eclipse runtime.

Conveyer Belt Monitor saves millions 27/07/2005

Large quarries and mines frequently carry their raw product to processing or storage areas via giant conveyor belts. The belts can be many kilometres in length, costing hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. When you consider the nature of the product being carried, it's not surprising that belts are sometimes punctured by rocks or machinery teeth which have sheared from the cutting equipment. In such cases it is essential that the damage is detected quickly to minimise the risk of the puncture turning into a rip which propagates along the belt.

MPC Data has just completed the latest incarnation of software for the world's leading belt-damage detection system. The sensor technology has been perfected by Ashby Microsystems Limited. At MPC Data we worked very closely with their engineers to design and implement critical PC-based software to gather, analyse and present data from Ashby's sensors. The finished product continuously analyses belt 'signature' information to provide automatic warnings of any change in belt characteristics. The new software is already installed at one site in Arizona with others to follow soon.

MPC Data in the press 26/07/2005

MPC Data has recently featured in Automotive Electronics (June/July issue). The article 'Fitting after-market options to CAN Vehicles' describes the development by MPC Data of a system that allows after market access to any CAN bus in any vehicle.

Also Phil Buckley, Business Development Director of MPC Data explains our philosophy for software requirements capture in Micro Technology Europe (MTe) (June issue).
