Will the keyboard become a thing of the past? 09/01/2006

The computer keyboard could become an optional extra for many users, if an innovative input device being developed at MPC Data is as successful as its Wiltshire-based designers intend.

Over the years, many alternatives to the conventional computer keyboard have been proposed, and several have made it to market. Despite this, the traditional QWERTY keyboard has stood the test of time, and the vast majority of computer keyboards today are only a few minor evolutionary steps from the keyboards of 20 years ago.

The advantages of the new device include one-handed operation, a demand for less desk space and a reduction in the musculo-skeletal problems caused by keyboards. It should be faster than typing for those who "hunt-and-peck", but we have to await the prototype to see how its speed compares with touch-typing.

A working prototype will be completed in the first quarter of 2006."
